Rockets
For my second period I have science workshop with Mr. West. Science workshop is really fun because, we get to build rockets, make slide show presentations, and do a whole bunch of other cool stuff.
In science workshop we are making sleds called Newton Sleds. To make one you get a piece of wood that is about six inches long and three inches wide, put three screws in it (=- like this), put a rubber band around the two in the front, pull it back with a string, wrap the string around the screw in the back, put the "sled" on about twenty dowels (small circular pieces of wood about three inches long) spaced about an inch apart, put a block of wood about three inches x one inch x two inches between the two long pieces of rubber band that were pulled back to the back screw then burn the string to release the rubber band holding the block of wood.
We all got a partner and did this. After we lit the string on fire we, apparently, didn't make sure that the match and string weren't still hot when we put them in the trash can, and it lit the trash can on fire so it melted. Mr. West showed us a picture today of the trash can and it was all melted and burnt... It was kind of funny yet scary that that was in the same class room that I was in when he told us what had happened.
So moral of the story make sure that the match and string that you lit on fire are out before you put them in the trashcan.

Straw rockets One of the first project that I did was making straw rockets and launching them. You first get a straw, then you put a small piece of clay in the top. Then you can put fins on it if you want but that is optional.
When you launch then you would use a launcher like the one shown on the lower right. when you launch them you put the straw on the... smaller straw that is pointing where youwant the rocket to go. Whgen you have done that you lift the weight on the top and let it drop. When the weight drops it blows air ou of the smaller straw pushing the bigger straw away in the direction you want it to go. |
