This week in pre-algebra, students have been learning about the formulas of lines. In algebra, this is not what we have been learning about but we did learn about it in the beginning of the year.
When you get the equation of a line, you can ask many questions such as "Is the line going up or down?" and "What is the line's slope?" These questions, along with many more, can be answered by just looking at the line or the equation. First I will show you what most equations will look like but with numbers. y=mx+b.
Is the line going up or down? this question is answered by looking at the equation. The last number in the equation (the "b" if you will) is going to be either positive, or negative. If the "b" is positive, then the line is going up. But if the "b" is negative, then the line is going down.
What is the line's slope? The lines slope is the last number, the b, in the equation is the slope. this is how it helps to determine whether or not the line is going up.
